The invention is an improved belt tensioner for a belt drive system (10) having a belt tensioner (28), a crankshaft pulley (24), an accesory pulley, and a motor/generator pulley (14). The belt drive system further includes a power transmission belt (30) trained about the crankshaft pulley, the accessory pulley, and the motor/generator pulley. The belt tensioner is of t he type including an attachment point adapted to be affixed to a stationary poi nt relative to a cylinder block of an engine, a first belt tensioner pulley (16 ), a biasing member (38), and a connective portion adapted to communicate a for ce from the biasing member to the power transmission belt via the first belt tensioner pulley. An improved version mutually asymmetrically biases the fir st tensioner pulley and the second tensioner pulley toward movement tending to increase tension upon the power transmission belt.
