A gate roller apparatus for a slidable gate construction includes a shaf t, a rotatable roller having a grooved periphery mounted on the shaft, and a hollow guard housing surrounding the roller, except on one side of the housing which is open. The housing has inner and outer side walls and two opposite end walls. A guard member is movably mounted on the housing adjacent at least one of the end walls and has a cavity formed in one end thereof sized to receive a portion of an elongate guiding frame of the gate. During use of the apparatus, the guiding frame moves in the grooved periphery of the roller and extends through the cavity. The guard member can be biased so as to slidingly engage an adjacent side of the guiding frame an d thereby prevent inadvertent contact of fingers or clothing with the roller.< /SDOAB>
