A method and an apparatus for detecting damage to a tool in a machine tool is provided to prevent drive the machine tool having a damaged tool by allowing an operator to instantaneously recognize the damage to the tool. In an apparatus for detecting damage to a tool in a machine tool, a jig plate(50) is formed of an insulating material and fixed to a body of the machine tool. A housing(15) has a female screw at an inner peripheral surface thereof. A male screw is formed at an outer peripheral surface of a screw shaft(10). The screw shaft is inserted into the housing. An adapter(20) is formed at one side of the screw shaft. A tool(T) mounted to a master spindle(1) cuts a mother material(B) by connecting a power transmission device at the other side of the screw shaft. An electrode(60) is applied to a housing. The power transmission device is insulated by engaging an insulating joint(30) with the other side of the screw shaft(10). An electrode(70) different from the electrode applied to the housing is applied to the mother material, and the mother material is insulated from the body of the machine tool. A controller controls the operation of the machine tool by applying current to the electrodes and determining whether a current is detected.
