METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DECIDING INTRA PREDICTION MODE

A method and an apparatus for determining an intra prediction mode are provided to reduce operation complexity when extracting directionality by using pixel information in an input block and determining the intra prediction mode. A labeling unit adds labels to respective pixels of an input block according to the amplitude of pixel values(310). A scanning unit scans the labeled input block according to a certain scan table. When the same label is added to pixels of a certain position according to a direction of a certain intra prediction mode, the scanning unit counts the corresponding intra prediction mode and calculates a mode count of each intra prediction mode(320). A prediction mode determining unit determines an intra prediction mode of the input block by using the mode count of the calculated intra prediction mode(330).
