The device (1) has an arc tube (8) e.g. xenon lamp, and cylindrical lenses (2-7) for focusing a light beam from the arc tube. Each cylindrical lens has a longitudinal axis parallel to straight sections (9-11) of the arc tube. The straight sections are oriented in several directions around a predetermined azimuthal axis (A), where the number and orientation of the straight sections are selected such that the light beam is directed in all azimuthal directions around the azimuthal axis.
