The device has an excited fluorescent bar code`s luminous intensity pre-detection system (4) delivering a pre-detection signal corresponding to a luminous intensity emitted by an excited fluorescent bar code. The system controls a fluorescent bar code reading head (3) based on the signal used as a control threshold. The system has a casing (33) with a window (34) on the casing wall, a lighting system (35) formed of LEDs placed on both sides of the window and a spot detector (39) e.g. photodiode, providing the signal to a control/processing unit (31) controlling the head.
