The invention relates to a method for detecting and selecting foreign parts in cigarettes, in which the tobacco is exposed in the vicinity of the cigarette maker to microwave radiation and both a signal S<SUB>D </SUB>relating to the tobacco density and a signal S<SUB>F </SUB>relating to the tobacco moisture are generated. The density signal S<SUB>D </SUB>and moisture signal S<SUB>F </SUB>are evaluated in combination with one another for the detection of the presence or absence of foreign parts in the tobacco.
