The system has a steering shaft (3) with sections (4, 6) mounted and rotating around an axis in a steering shaft support (10) with parts (12, 14). The support is connected to an energy dissipation device (16) to bring the parts (12, 14) closer together along the axis, upon an impact undergone by a motor vehicle. The part (12) and the section (4) have complimentary coupling units (26, 28) e.g. teeth, connecting the part (12) and the section (4) in rotation around the axis if the units are engaged, in case of impact. The units (26, 28) form axial stop between the part (12) and the section (4).
