Novel 1-alkyl-3-azetidinols of formula where R = Me or Et and hydrochlorides thereof are prepared by: condensing 1,3-dichloro-2- propanol with an aralkyl halide or benzyl halomethyl ether to give a 1,3-dichloro-2-propyl ether which is treated with a lower alkylamine to give a 1-alkyl-3-azetidinyl ether from which the ether group is removed by hydrogenation. Intermediates prepared in the above reaction are: 1,3 - dichloro - 2 - diphenylmethoxypropane, 2 - benzyloxymethoxy - 1,3 - dichloropropane, 1- methyl - 3 - diphenylmethoxyazetidine, 1 -ethyl - 3 - diphenylmethoxyazetidine and 3 - benzyloxymethoxy-1-methylazetidine. 1 - Methyl - 3 - azetidinol hydrochloride is treated with phosgene to give 5-chloromethyl-3- methyl-2-oxazolidinone which is then reacted with guaiacol to give 5 - (o - methoxyphenoxymethyl)-3-methyl-2-oxazolidinone.</p> |
