<p>1276121 N-phenyl-piperidine derivatives CIBA GEIGY AG 16 June 1969 [14 June 1968] 30402/69 Heading C2C [Also in Division C4] Compounds containing residues of formula wherein the 4-position of the piperidine ring is linked to one, or preferably two, identical or different groups which are capable of acidifying a vicinal methylene group (e.g. CN, alkoxycarbonyl, arylsulphonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyl or carbonamide groups) are described. They are used in the preparation of azo dyes (see Divisions C4-C5). The preparation, by reaction of a reactive methylene compound with an N,N-disubstituted-aniline in the presence of a sodium alkoxide, of 4-cyano-4-ethoxycarbonyl - N - m - tolyl - or - phenyl - or - omethoxyphenyl- or -m-acetylaminophenylpiperidine, 4 - cyano - 4 - methoxycarbonyl - N- phenyl- or -o-methoxyphenyl- or -m-tolyl- or -m-acetylaminophenyl-piperidine, 4,4-bis-ethoxy-carbonyl-N-phenyl-piperidine, 4,4-dicyano- N-phenyl- or -m-tolyl - piperidine, 4-cyano-4- carbamoyl- or -phenylcarbamoyl-N-phenylpiperidine, 4 - acetyl - 4 - phenylcarbamoyl- or - ethoxycarbonyl-N-phenyl-piperidine and 4- cyano-4-phenylsulphonyl-N-phenyl-piperidine, is described. 4-Carbamoyl-4-methoxycarbonyl- or -ethoxycarbonyl-N-phenyl-piperidine is prepared by hydrolysis with conc H 2 SO 4 of the corresponding 4-cyano-compound. 4 - Acetyl - 4 - (N,N - diethylcarbamoyl) - 1- phenylpiperidine is prepared by condensing the 4-ethoxycarbonyl-compound with diethylamine. 1,2 - Bis - [1 - phenyl - 4 - cyano - piperidinyl- (4)-carbonylamino] ethane is prepared by condensing 4 - cyano - 4 - ethoxycarbonyl - 1- phenyl-piperidine with ethylene diamine.
