A driving control apparatus of a linear compressor and a controlling method thereof are provided to change stroke stably under the condition of requiring large freezing capacity, by driving the linear compressor in a voltage control mode under an overload condition and in a current control mode under a normal load condition, by judging load condition according to phase difference between current and the stroke. A control unit(130) judges an overload condition according to phase difference between current and stroke, and outputs a mode selection control signal selecting a voltage control mode or a current control mode on the ground of the judgment result. A first comparison unit(180) compares a current instruction value with a present input current in the current control mode, and outputs a current correction signal on the ground of the comparison result. A second comparison unit(190) compares a voltage instruction value with a present input voltage in the voltage control mode, and outputs a voltage correction signal on the ground of the comparison result. A PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) control unit(220) outputs a PWM control signal to change an input current or an input voltage, according to the current correction signal or the voltage correction signal. An inverter(230) changes a voltage or a current applied to a linear motor, by the PWM control signal.
