PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector in which an electrooptical modulator is miniaturized by commonly using the configurations of a light source device and a projection optical system and the position of a projected image on a screen is the same as the position of the projected image before the electrooptical modulator is miniaturized. SOLUTION: The projector 1000 is equipped with: the light source device; the electrooptical modulator; the projection optical system; and an illumination optical system. A first virtual plane VP<SB>1</SB>including the optical axis of the projection optical system is biased in a y-axis (+) direction with respect to a second virtual plane VP<SB>2</SB>including the optical axis 10ax of the light source device. The electrooptical modulator is arranged so that the center p of an image forming area S<SB>2</SB>is placed between the first virtual plane VP<SB>1</SB>and the second virtual plane VP<SB>2</SB>. The illumination optical system has the function of converting an illumination luminous flux emitted from the light source device into an illumination luminous flux having a center axis passing through the center p of the image forming area S<SB>2</SB>.
