PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument removal system (80) for removing a detector cable (82) from a nuclear reactor. SOLUTION: The instrument removal system comprises a removal cart (84) and a disposal cask (86). The removal cart comprises a base section (88), including a plurality of wheels (90, 120) connected to the section, a motor (92) mounted on the base section and a drive shaft (94), operationally connected with the motor. A disposal spool (96) is removably installed on the drive shaft, and includes a notch (98) positioned to accept a detector cable. A housing (106) is installed on the base section and surrounds the disposal spool. An inlet port (108) is arranged inside the housing so as to permit the detector cable to enter the housing.
