PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel assembly and a retainer for it which have simpler structures and can prevent the vertical displacement in the case of an earthquake without doing heavy damage to refueling workability. SOLUTION: The fuel assembly 1 which includes fuel rods 8 in a channel box 10 shaped like a prism and is equipped with a top tie plate 5 with a handhold 9 at the top of the fuel rods 8 and whose top is supported horizontally by a top guide 4 is so constituted that the assembly 1 includes a direct-acting guide 12 fixed onto the top tie plate 5, a locking slider 13 which is guided by the direct-acting guide 12 to move horizontally and slider movement mechanisms (15, 17 and 19) which make the insertion and extraction of the slider 13 to a locking hole 11 formed in the top guide 4.
