The method involves surrounding a core rod (2a) using a hollow cylinder (1a) by leaving an evacuable annular gap (3a). Each of the rod and cylinder has a distal end and a proximal end (7). The annular gap is section wise collapsed, and an optical component is continuously removed from the collapsed region. A distal end (4) of another hollow cylinder (1) is attached indirectly or directly to the proximal end (7) before complete collapsing of the annular gap. Inner bores (3) of the hollow cylinders are fluidly separated from each other during formation of a connection. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for manufacturing an optical component.
