<p>A programmable device (10) for validating a secure tag (24). The device comprises: an excitation source (14); a controller (30) coupled to the excitation source (14); a detector (28) coupled to the controller (30); and a communications port (40) coupled to the controller (30). The controller (30) receives updated time period information via the communications port (40). During operation, the controller (30) activates and de-activates the excitation source (14), which illuminates the secure tag (24). The controller (30) also causes the detector (28) to measure luminescence from the tag (24) in accordance with time period information set by the controller (30). This enables the time period information to be changed to reduce the possibility of a counterfeit secure tag replicating the uminescence from a genuine secure tag (24).</p> |
