<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emitting element and a field emission display using the same capable of adequately emitting an electron. <P>SOLUTION: The electron emitting element A1 is provided with a substrate 1A, a cathode electrode 2 formed on the substrate 1A, an insulating layer 3 formed on the cathode electrode 2, a gate electrode 4 formed on the insulating layer 3, and an electron emitting source 5 housed in a hole 3a and formed on the cathode electrode 2.
