An optical module (1) having a light receiving/emitting element (3) for emitting or receiving a light signal; an optical waveguide (2) having a core section optically joined to the light receiving/emitting element (3) and formed from a translucent material and also having a clad section formed from a material having a different refraction factor from the core section; and a package (5) for receiving at least one end of the optical waveguide (2), which one end includes an entrance/exit opening (2c) for a light signal, and also receiving the light receiving/emitting element (3). That surface of the package (5) which is at an end of the optical waveguide (2) received in the package (5) and faces a bottom plate on which the light receiving/emitting element (3) is mounted is constructed from both a first region and a second region different from the first region, the first region including a portion projecting in the space in the package (5). The package (5) has a support section (5a) that supports, in the first region, a part of at least one side of the surface forming the first region and also supports, in the second region, a part of at least two sides of the surface forming the second region.
