PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and effective method for producing a vapor grown carbon fiber, with which a carbon fiber is effectively formed by greatly improving the rate of effective utilization of catalyst or catalyst precursor and as the result, a carbon fiber is inexpensively produced. SOLUTION: The method for producing a vapor grown carbon fiber comprises introducing a raw material containing at least a carbon source, a catalyst and/or a catalyst precursor compound to a heating zone 1 to produce a carbon fiber in a vapor phase. The raw material further contains a sulfur compound represented by formula R<SP>1</SP>-S<SB>n</SB>-R<SP>2</SP>(n is an integer of 1-5; R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbon compound selected from the group consisting of a 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbon group and aromatic hydrocarbon group).
