<PICT:0837285/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0837285/IV (a)/2> Synthetic linear high polymers are meltspun to form filaments and like products through a spinneret having one or more extrusion orifices, the cross-section of each of which constitutes a main narrow elongated slot communicating with a number of slots spaced apart from one another along the length of the main slot, the length of each of said laterally-extending slots being a multiple of the width of the main slot. Each orifice may have a total cross-sectional area of 0.05-0.25 sq. mm. and the width of the main slot and of each of the laterally-extending slots may be greater than 0.04 mm. and is preferably between 0.05 and 0.08 mm. The main slot may be rectilinear or may be curved over its length and may be in the shape of an arc of a circle or a part of a spiral, the lateral slots extending radially from the main slot. The lateral slots can form a continuous passage across the main slot or can be in staggered relationship to one another, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. They may be of the same or different lengths and may be curved or rectilinear. The width of the slots shown in Fig. 2 is 0.06 mm., the lengths of slots 4 and 5 are 0.40 and 0.15 mm. respectively and the radius of the arc-shaped main slot 3 is 3.5 mm. The products of the invention have a lobed cross-section, reduced lustre, improved thermal insulating properties and a non-slippery feel. Specifications 381,456 and 779,822 are referred to. |
