A filling and venting device according to Specification 1,197,730 has a moulded sleeve 21 which includes an inner end 22 which is axially resilient and which engages a fixed abutment 16 which is positioned in the cell at a predetermined distance below the desired electrolyte level. The arrangement is such that as cover 27 is engaged with the battery lid 14 the outer end of sleeve 21 is moved by spigot 28 from a first position in which it closes the cell to the atmosphere to a second position wherein it allows communication of the cell to the atmosphere through apertures 25, against the resilience of its inner end. When the cover is removed the resilience of its inner end 22 aids the co-action between spigot 28 and sleeve 21 to move the sleeve back to its first position. As shown, the fixed abutment 16 is a perforated splash plate. |
