Provided are a planar lighting device which radiates light having a high luminance and excellent monochromaticity, and a liquid crystal display device using such planar lighting device. A planar lighting device (11) is provided with a laser light source (12) which emits red, green and blue laser beams; at least one light guide means (14) which is optically connected with the laser light source for propagating the laser beams outputted from the laser light source and is arranged in planar shape; a planar light guide plate (15), which is arranged on the front side of the light guide means, spreads the laser beam propagating in the light guide means and outputs the laser beam from one of the main planes (21); and a plurality of light taking out means (19) for guiding the laser beam propagating in the light guide means to the light guide plate.
