PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a luminous flux maintenance factor by suppressing blackening generated by high power supply at the time of starting. SOLUTION: This metal halide lamp is provided with a translucent airtight container 1 having a light-emitting tube part 11 forming a discharge space 14 in the inside, and a pair of sealing parts 121, 122 formed at both ends of the light-emitting tube part 11, a discharge medium composed of a metal halide 15 and a rare gas sealed into the discharge space essentially not containing mercury, and the pair of electrodes 31, 32 in which one end is sealed into the sealing parts 121, 122, and in which the tip sides are arranged oppositely in the discharge space 14, and lighted in a state that a tube axis is nearly horizontal. Then, an area of the metal halide 15 when viewed from below of the light-emitting tube part 11 is 16 mm<SP>2</SP>or more during switching off. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
