A coating apparatus having a die ( 30 ) and a nipple ( 31 ) coats a plastic optical fiber ( 11 ) with a protective layer ( 39 ) formed from a thermoplastic resin ( 32 ). The diameter T<SUB>A </SUB>(mum) of the die, the outer diameter T<SUB>B1 </SUB>(mum) of the nipple, the inner diameter T<SUB>B2 </SUB>(mum) of the nipple and the diameter D (mum) of the optical plastic fiber satisfy the following formulae: <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>20 (mum)<=(T<SUB>A</SUB>-T<SUB>B1</SUB>)<=1500 (mum) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>20 (mum)<=(T<SUB>B2</SUB>-D)<=600 (mum) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>400 (mum)<(T<SUB>B1</SUB>-T<SUB>B2</SUB>)<=1500 (mum) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> Thereby, the thermoplastic resin ( 32 ) is coated on the plastic optical fiber ( 11 ) without causing stress distribution to the plastic optical fiber ( 11 ).
