The invention relates to urea derivatives according to formula (I) in which: groups R¹, R², R³ and R^4, independently of one another represent a hydrogen atom, a C₁- to C₄ alkyl group, a C₂- to C₆ alkenyl group or a C₂- to C₆ hydroxyalkyl group with at least one hydroxy group, with the provision that at least one of said groups represents a C₂- to C₆ hydroxyalkyl group with at least one hydroxy group. These urea derivatives are suitable for increasing the volume of keratin fibres, in particular human hair. The increase in volume can even be achieved during an oxidative treatment, e.g. during oxidative colouring or bleaching.
