<p>1,243,485. Typewriters. ING C. OLIVETTI & C. S.p.A. 2 July, 1970 [15 July, 1969], No. 32253/70. Heading B6F. A carriage locking device for an electric typewriter comprises a motor switch 1 operating contacts 9, 10 and which is mechanically coupled to a locking member 31 resiliently biased against a movable guide 33 of the carriage of the typewriter so that it will notch into a slot 32 when the carriage is central and the motor switched off. In the Figure the switch 1 is in the off position, contacts 9, 10 are open and a link 11 draws a locking bail 14 beneath all keys 17 to prevent operation. A crankpin 18 also pulls a slider 19 forwardly which pivots lever 24 clockwise. A resilient connection 26, 27, 28 urges the locking member 31 against the guide 33. The slider 19 is also coupled to a carriage-return clutch 42 by a bellcrank 21 and a slotted connection 37, 38. The forward movement of the slider 19, in a switching off movement, disconnects the clutch which is held disengaged by a latch 45, 44 until a carriage return key, connected to tie rod 48 is subsequently operated.
