PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite optical device which prevents the increse of cost and the deterioration of image, and also ensures reliability (durability). SOLUTION: The composite optical device includes: reflection type light modulating elements 3 and 9; reflection type polarizing plates 5 and 14; polarizing plates 7 and 12 for removing unnecessary polarization; a cross dichroic prism 16; and a projection lens 18.
