PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat resistant magnesium alloy having improved thermal strength by allowing its solid solution strengthening to be exhibited to the maximum, and in which the generation of shrinkage cavities and casting cracks upon die casting can be prevented. SOLUTION: The heat resistant magnesium alloy comprises, by mass, 0.5 to 3.8% gadolinium, 1 to 15% of at least one element selected from the group consisting of lanthanoids from lanthanum to europium in the periodic table, 0.1 to 0.8% silver and/or 0.1 to 1.8% zinc, and the balance magnesium with inevitable impurities.
