PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low mol. wt. naphthol polymer having hydroxynaphthalene units and oxynaphthalene units, and to provide a method for producing the low mol. wt. naphthol polymer with an enzyme. SOLUTION: This method for producing the low mol. wt. naphthol polymer having hydroxynaphthalene units and oxynaphthalene units, comprising a process for oxidatively polymerizing 1-naphthol and/or 2-naphthol as a raw material in the presence of an oxidation-reduction enzyme in water, an aqueous solution or a mixture solvent of water or an aqueous solution and an organic solvent, and a process for extracting the obtained polymerization reaction product with a solvent, is characterized in that the mass-average mol. wt. of the naphthol polymer is≤3,000.
