Outer and inner carriers (6, 8) each hold plates (7, 9) fixed against rotation, whilst permitting axial (A) movement. Inner and outer plates alternate, together forming a plate pack. The outer carrier (6) is carried in bearings for limited rotation about the axis, relative to the casing (4). It includes at least one stud (12) providing rotary support. The measurement system in the casing accepts a force from the stud, which is directed transversely with respect to the axis. This force is generated on clutch operation.
