1,173,726. Laminating film webs. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 26 June, 1968 [10 July, 1967], No. 30511/68. Heading B5N. Two flexible film webs 1, 2, at least one of which is coated with thermoplastic, are laminated together by being passed through the nip between a pair of heated rollers 3, 6 and through a pool of water or other liquid 5 maintained above the nip so that one of the films has both surfaces in contact with the liquid. The film 1 passes along the side of the pool so that the coating on its outer surface, which may contain a release agent, will not be affected. After passing -the nip, the films are passed together around the heated roller 4 before being drawn off over a roller 7. The resultant laminate, which may be for packaging, has excellent optical clarity. The films, which may be of the same or different materials, may be of regenerated cellulose coated with a vinyl polymer or copolymer, or may be of paper or other cellulose material, or of a polyolefin or polyester. The inner surface of the film 1 is preferably precoated with a heat-activated adhesive, e.g. polyethyl acrylate or a two-part urethane-type adhesive. |
