An illumination device that has an illuminator with an open reflective plate and a metal halide lamp and in which a reduction in brightness and occurrence of glare are suppressed. The illumination device (10) has the metal halide lamp (14) and the illuminator (12). The metal halide lamp (14) has a light emission tube (30) having inside a pair of electrodes, an inner tube (32) for receiving the light emission tube and having at one end a pinch seal section, and an outer tube (34) receiving the inner tube and having at one end a fitting. The illuminator has the reflective plate (16) having a concave reflective surface (20), a socket, and an installation member (18). In the inner tube is formed a diffusion section (88) at a position nearer to the forward end of the inner tube than an intermediate position of the pair of electrodes, and the diffusion section (88) diffuses light emitted from the light emission tube.
