The method involves setting an electrode in an oscillating movement and lowering the electrode in the direction of a workpiece surface to be machined. A machining current pulse is generated for removing material on the workpiece surface when a minimum, predefined distance between the electrode and the workpiece surface is reached. An electrolyte located in the gap formed between the electrode and the workpiece between two successive machining current pulses is exchanged. The electrolyte exchange is effected during a period of a maximum distance between electrode and the workpiece surface. An independent claim is included for an electrochemical machining of a workpiece and a use of a method or an apparatus.
