An optical disk type determination method is provided to be capable of determining plus/minus types based on section information if a loaded DVD-R(Digital Versatile Disk-Recordable) or DVD-RW(Rewritable) sort of an optical disk is a previously recorded optical disk or data is recorded thereon, thereby improving plus/minus type decision performance of DVD-R and DVD-RW sorts of disks. If a loaded optical disk is a DVD-R or DVD-RW type, a blank is detected to decide whether the disk is a blank disk or a data disk(S101-S201). If the blank is not detected, the disk is recognized as the data disk to extract a tracking method from sector information after the sector information is obtained(S203,S205). If the extracted tracking method is a groove tracking type, the currently loaded DVD-R or DVD-RW sort of a disk is decided as a plus-type disk(A). If the extracted tracking method is a differential phase tracking type, the currently loaded DVD-R or DVD-RW sort of a disk is decided as a minus-type disk(S111).
