<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium and coloring matter for forming a recording layer thereof which are superior in solubility to 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropanol (TFP) being a coating solvent on the occasion of forming the recording layer of the optical recording medium, and is also capable of responding to optical recording using blue laser light. <P>SOLUTION: The coloring matter for forming the recording layer of the optical recording medium contains a compound expressed by general formula (1). In the formula, X1 and X2 denote each oxygen, nitrogen that may have a substituent, or sulfur. R1-R4 and R9-R12 denote each an arbitrary univalent substituent and at least one of R5-R8 and at least one of R13-R16 denote each an electron-absorptive substituent, while the others denote each an arbitrary univalent substituent. Adjacent substituents of R1-R16 may also be bonded directly or by the medium of a connecting group. M1 denotes an arbitrary metal atom. It may also have a counter anion Y so as to make the whole molecule neutral.
