PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of achieving efficient automatic focusing operation by inexpensive constitution using no sensor or the like by removing a useless period which may be generated by a dead zone of a lens actuator, and to provide a method for controlling the imaging apparatus. SOLUTION: A camera apparatus with an automatic focusing function is provided in which a focus lens supported so as to be moved in an optical axis direction is moved by a moving mechanism using a voice coil motor and an optimum lens position is obtained by using a focus evaluation value obtained by the analysis of an imaging signal. In the camera apparatus, the dead zone of motor drive control based on the characteristics of the voice coil motor is predetected, a control value of motor driving energy is set in accordance with the dead zone and the motor drive energy is controlled on the basis of the control value.
