PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently recognize a character part of an image represented by partial image data and to efficiently compress the character-recognized image. SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus comprises an identification means for identifying the size of an image, a resolution setting means for setting a resolution based on the size of the image, and a recognition means for recognizing the presence of a character at the resolution.
