PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for surely detecting that a recording medium collides with a recording head, regardless of the type of the recording medium and the shape of a lift of the recording medium. SOLUTION: The recording medium carried out of a recording medium tray 6 by a pair of pick-up rollers 7 is sent to an image recording unit 4 via a pair of registration rollers 8. A recording medium lift detection member 21 constituting a collision detection mechanism 10 detects the recording medium 9 on which a lift exceeding a predetermine distance t1 is formed and applies the pressure with a corresponding magnitude to a force sensor 22. A threshold is preset according to the type of the recording medium 9, and the force sensor 22 compares the detected value with the threshold. If the detected output exceeds the threshold, there is a possibility that the relevant recording medium 9 may collide with the recording head 16 and the carrying of the recording medium 9 is stopped.
