A junction member for connecting the adjacent ends of two tube ports 5, 5 comprises a body portion through which fluid may flow, two tubular stubs 1 to receive the ends of the tube parts, and one, or more, openings 18, 19 each closable by a closure member such as 21 the opening, or openings, being such that, with the closure member, or members, removed, the opening or openings, provide access through which an expanding tool can be inserted into, and removed from, the junction member to effect expansion of at least one of the tube ends into its associated stub 1. The junction member includes a semi-cylindrical part 8 between the two axially-aligned stubs 2, and an enlargement 17 in the front face 12 of which an opening 18 is formed. The ends walls 13, 14 of the enlargement 17 are joined to the adjacent stubs 1, either by two channels 15, Fig. la, which have further closable openings 19 through which a rod to operate the expansion tool can be introduced, or by two channels 16, Fig. 1b. For purpose of illustration Fig. 1 shows a junction member with both types of channels 15, 16, in practice however a junction member has two channels of the same kind. In a modification, Fig. 6, not shown, the enlargement (45) is of semi-cylindrical shape and has openings (46, 47) in its end walls which are axially aligned on an axis parallel to the axis of the stubs (51), and which are closed by removable thimbles (48, 49). The axis of each openings (46 or 47) may be inclined toward the stub (51) at the other end of the junction member. The junction member may be in the form of a tubular "T'-junction the branch at right angles to the two aligned stubs being closed by a thimble. The "T"-junction may be provided with channels which are similar to the channels 16, Fig. 1b. The junction members are used particularly for repairing faulty tubes in panels of tubes, which form the boundary walls of a gas space in a water tube boiler and the spaces between which are closed by webs. The faulty piece of tube is cut out and replaced by a good length of tube which is joined to the cut ends of the pipe by junction members (34, 39) Fig. 5, not shown. |
