An object detection system (10) for use by a miner comprises a wireless signal receiver (34) adapted to be carried on the body of the miner for receiving a wireless signal transmitted by a transmitter TX 1 on an object, such as a vehicle 12, to be detected. A controller (36) is connected to the receiver and the controller is connected to an indicator arrangement (40,42) carried on the body of the miner for causing the indicator arrangement to provide a first indication when the receiver is within a first range of the vehicle 12.
