<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem in a light emitting element having a rectangular shape when viewed from the top that light totally reflected at an end facet repeats its total reflection for ever and cannot be output externally. <P>SOLUTION: A light emitting element having a rectangular shape when viewed from the top has a semiconductor layer 10 which includes an n-type gallium-nitride compound semiconductor layer 10a, a luminous layer 10c made of a gallium-nitride compound semiconductor, and a p-type gallium-nitride compound semiconductor layer 10b, sequentially laminated in this order.
