PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve matching precision with fewer amount of computation. SOLUTION: In a stereo image processor, in a reference image of one frame, correlation operation is performed for each of two reference areas which are shifted right and left by one pixel from a 4×4 correlation source area to be processed to calculate correlation value S<SB>n-1</SB>, S<SB>n+1</SB>, and the value which indicates the weaker correlation of the two correlation values is an evaluation value (step 2). By comparing the evaluation value with a specified threshold value, it is determined whether the correlation source area to be processed has strong self correlation (step 3).
