PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide buttonholing thread excellent in strength in buttonholing as compared with those of conventional wooly nylon machine threads, capable of reducing its thickness, and improving the appearance quality of a product and touch and texture of a buttonhole stitch part using the same. SOLUTION: This thread used for the buttonhole stitch part comprises a covering thread including a core yarn composed of a melt spun rubbery elastic yarn and a covering yarn composed of a thermoplastic synthetic fiber. Preferably, the covering yarn is a double-covering yarn, and the ratio of the ply twist number to the first twist number is 0.6 to 0.9 in the double-covering yarn, and the rubbery elastic yarn has 55-95% PSD value (permanent distortion rate after elongating an elastic yarn by 100% and treating the yarn by dry heat set at 140°C for 60 sec).
