PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical filter has a high response speed than before. SOLUTION: The optical filter of the present invention is equipped with a waveguide 10, two grooves 10a and 10b dividing the waveguide respectively, ferroelectric liquid crystal 20 formed on a waveguide 12 disposed between the grooves 10a and 10b, and an electrode 22 which controls an alignment direction of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 20. This optical filter can vary the refractive index of the waveguide 12 by changing the alignment direction of the ferroelectric liquid crystal 20. Light which can be transmitted through the waveguide 12 varies in wavelength as the refractive index of the waveguide 12 is varied.
