PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system, capable of determining the solvent permeability of a considerably thin film and a thin coating. SOLUTION: The method for determining the permeability of a film or a coating for a solvent, such as water, is disclosed. First, a substrate containing an absorption layer or a container layer made of, preferably, a porous material is prepared. The porous material is hydrophilic for investigating the permeability of water. The coating is formed film on the upper portion of the porous material. The substrate, having a film or coating on the upper portion of the absorption layer or container layer is placed inside a pressure chamber, and is filled with a gaseous substance, such as steam, in the solvent. By increasing/decreasing the steam pressure in the pressure chamber between zero and the balanced steam pressure of the solvent, permeability of the solvent between the film or coating can be determined. The amount of solvent, capable of permeating through the film or the coating, can be measured by polarization analysis method, mass spectrometry, or the like. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
