PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of forming a highly precise image and to provide an image compensation method therefor. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 is provided with; image forming parts 10Y, 10M, 10C and 10K in which main scanning exposure is carried out by a multi beam optical scanner 21 using an optical beam; an image forming part 10S in which main scanning exposure is carried out by an LED exposure head 22 using an LED array; an intermediate transfer belt 12 on which each toner image from each image forming part 10Y, 10M, 10C, 10K and 10S are superposed and transferred; a pattern detection part 50 detecting a toner image carried on the intermediate transfer belt 12; and a control part 40 compensating and controlling main scanning exposure of the image forming parts 10Y, 10M, 10C and 10K based on the detected information of the pattern detection part 50 detecting the toner image formed by the image forming part 10S.
