PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer which can inhibit the generation of creases in an ink ribbon by preventing the ink ribbon from obliquing by a low-cost ribbon releasing means. SOLUTION: This thermal transfer printer is equipped with a release guide plate 8 having a first guide surface 81 which guides the running of the ink ribbon 4 in a close contact with a printable medium after printing and a second guide surface 82 which guides the running of the ink ribbon 4 released from the printable medium. In addition, the printer is constituted so that the angle "α" between the first guide surface 81 and the second guide surface 82 of the release plate 8, is nearly the same as the pickup angle "β" of the ink ribbon 4 by a ribbon take-up shaft 6. Further, the ink ribbon 4 after printing is picked up in the way that the former is always guided by the first guide surface 81 and the second guide surface 82 of the release plate 8.
