An improved process for producing piperidine-2,6-diones heterocyclically substituted at the 3-position in a minimal number of reaction stages by reacting a 2-aminobenzylamine with a 3-bromoglutarimide to obtain an amine of formula (IV): and thereafter reacting the obtained amine of formula (IV) with a suitable further reactant.
