1,272,429. Extruding fibre-reinforced thermosetting resins. GLANZSTOFF A.G. 22 July, 1969 [10 Aug., 1968], No. 36794/69. Heading B5A. In the extrusion of fibre-reinforced thermosetting resins, a mixture comprising 20-40% by weight of synthetic fibres of lengths from 5 to 50 mm., 25 to 50% by weight of resin, with a remainder comprising hardeners and/or fillers is extruded from a screw extruder having a cooled barrel and a heated die. Particular thermosetting resins mentioned are unsaturated polyester and epoxide resins. Fibre materials mentioned are polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides such as nylon 66 and polyacrylonitrile. Fibre mixtures may be used. Additives mentioned are chalk, kaolin and dolomite as fillers, zinc or calcium stearate as lubricants, silicon dioxide as a thixotropic agent, dyes and pigments. The mixture is preferably stored for at least 2 to 3 days before extrusion, and when extruded, the barrel is cooled to a temperature of 20‹ C. or less, e.g. using water, and the die is preferably maintained at a temperature of 125-140‹ C. A detailed example is given. |
