Alkylidene bis(phenols) having at least one unsubstituted -o or -p position to a phenolic -OH group, and free from tert-alkyl groups in such -o or -p positions are alkylated in the presence of an alkylating agent and aqueous H 2 SO 4 (having at least 50% H 2 SO 4 by wt.). The major component in the product obtained is the mono-alkylated derivative. The alkylating agent may be isobutylene,2-methylbutene-1 1 or 2- methylbutene-2. The preferred molar ratio of alkylating agent to the bisphenol is from 1 to 3À5. |
